Chris Cameron: Blues Ahead of His Time
Excerpted from a bio by Lynn Wasson
of e Fort Smith magazine
With genuine soulful intensity emanating through his guitar and his heartfelt vocals, this young man out of
Arkansas is putting out blues ahead of his time. Chris has already opened for heavyweights, such as W.C.
Clark, Roomful of Blues, Bonnie Raitt, Keb’Mo, Delbert McClinton, Sherman Robertson, and many more. A
truly amazing experience for Cameron! Several of these national acts have really taken notice of Cameron,
asking for demos and/or offering to make introductions.
In 1997, Chris participated in the International Blues Talent Competition (Now the International Blues
Challenge) held in Memphis, Tennessee. The contest was held during Memphis’ high profile BluesStock
weekend. There he competed with 37 bands from all over the world. Cameron performed solo-acoustic at
the contest, and came away the overall winner. He won the Albert King Award for “Most Promising
International Blues Guitarist,” and also won first place in the overall contest. As a result of Cameron’s
unprecedented sweep at the IBTC, he earned many prizes including opening spots in both the W.C. Handy
Awards, and the renowned King Biscuit Blues Festival.
On March 4, 2000 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Cameron received the Northwest Arkansas Music Award for the
Best Guitarist; a People’s Choice Award.
Cameron spent the next 6 years making music with some of Arkansas most talented blues/rock musicians.
However, he was growing restless, and longed for greater creativity. As a result, Cameron began a musical
collaboration with long-time friend, and instrumentalist, Mike Westbrook. That relationship, along with the
sublime musicianship of Ed Carr, brought about a potent acoustic album in 2006; the genre-busting
acoustic opus, Acoustic Sessions II.
In 2007, with this new creative tailwind, Chris and Mike began writing prolifically. Some of those songs are
featured on Chris' new album "Old Dreams...Strange Cities."
